A Note about Form Demonstrations

As you watch the videos, you may notice small deviations from the correct form in a few of the movement demonstrations. As teachers, we strive to do and teach the movements properly, but just as students will encounter movements that are inhibited by Qi flow, previous injuries, or habits, so too will teachers. This is normal and shouldn’t stop you from teaching.

When teaching, it’s important to know what movements you need to improve. You can film yourself to have a better idea of how you are actually doing the movements. If you currently have limitations making certain movements, when teaching the form, let your students know and ask them to follow your verbal instructions rather than copying your movements. Or show one of the demonstration DVDs to demonstrate the movement.

When teaching, it’s helpful to let your students know that some movements may take longer to do properly depending on their physical condition and Qi flow. Assure them that they will still receive benefits from doing the method even with deviations from the proper form. Ask them to take an incremental approach to mastering the movements and to work on their form outside of practice. Remind them that the goal of practice isn’t perfection, rather, it’s to develop a good understanding of the method, do the Jingshen activities properly, and most of all, focus on deepening the good state.

A Note about Terminology

Just as everything in the universe changes, so too does Ren Xue. In 2023, the name of the second theory underpinning Ren Xue changed from the Theory of Shen and Yi to the Theory of Jingshen. Therefore, if you completed your Level 1 Teacher Training prior to 2023, some Ren Xue terms will have changed.

Some key changes include:

  • "Mind activity” changed to “Jingshen activity”, so where reference is made to "mind activity" in these videos, we now say "Jingshen activity".
  • The word "mind" is not used in general. Instead, use the words "consciousness", "focus" or "awareness".
  • We previously learned that life consists of three main components – Jing, Qi, and Shen. With the updated Theory of Jingshen, we now refer to the three main components of life as Jing, Qi, and Jingshen.
  • We previously learned that Shen is the master of Qi. We now refer to Jingshen as the master of Qi.

How does this affect your teaching and personal practice?

As an example, we can look at how this change will affect your teaching of Di Yuan and the Head and Face.

Di Yuan Preparation:Prior to June 2023, the preparation for Di Yuan included Adjust Body and Qi and Adjust Shen and Mind. The second adjustment is now Adjust Jingshen, which includes adjusting the consciousness, Shen, and the heart.

The Head and Face

At the end of each moving practice, you’ll teach students the Head and Face. The updates to the second theory will affect the wording in the verbal guidance. After pulling the lobes and putting the hands down, the previous verbal guidance prior to the update to the second theory referred to Shen being clear and bright. You’ll now teach this part of the practice differently. This is to acknowledge Jingshen as the master of Qi and of life.

In some of the videos in this series, the word “mind” has been used. The Teachers’ Checklists have the updated phrase. Please refer to the updated Level 1 Teacher Training manual in the original, Guided or Level 1 Teachers’ Review, for the current use of terminology.
